The importance of doing the little things

Written By Harry James Pointon on .

Big things are achieved when we do all the little things right.

As a Personal training in Manchester City Center, people always want to know what my number one tip to achieving their goals is?

Living in a world where everything is done so fast, we have become impatient. We want things right this minute, unfortunately not everything can be achieved right now; otherwise you wouldn’t want these things would you?

You see the number one reason for failure in my opinion of any task, goal or dream is that people set their expectations of what they can achieve in the short term, too high and they set their expectations of what they can achieve in the long term, too low.

Have you ever sat down and thought where did all that time go?

Have you ever sat down and thought that’s ages away, I have loads of time?

We always over estimate time in the future and then realise when we get there that actually the time flew by. Have you ever said something down the lines of “I can’t devote 12 weeks to doing that, that’s ages” Yet look back in years’ time and think of multiple short term failed attempts to achieve that same goal.

For a large percentage of people, their dreams always stay dreams because they don’t fully devote themselves to their goals and this in my opinion is because they are always looking to achieve their goals in just one jump, but the thing is great things involve 10’s, 100’s or 1000’s of little jumps and it is the combination of these jumps over a period of time that allows you to eventually reach the desired outcome.

By taking the first jump in the right direction the next stage can be seen. We don’t always know the answers that will allow us to obtain what we really want, but if we take a simple step in the right direction this will allow us to see the next step.

Like driving a car in the dark, you can only see so far, but as long as you keep following the path that you can see, eventually you will reach your landmark.

So whatever your missions in life are, have a think about what little steps you could be taking to reach that goal.

If you want more time away from your business, it could be as simple as what areas of my job, could I get someone else to do that costs less than my time.

If you want to get fit and healthy, it could be as simple as finding an advisor on exercise, nutrition, the mind or simply just joining a gym and making a commitment to attend every week on specific day for at least a period of 12 weeks.

The thing is, it doesn’t matter if it’s starting to eat an apple a day, delegating your diary management, scheduling a weekly workout or cutting out a toxic substance. It’s all the little changes that when added together allow the big things to happen.

Don’t expect miracles to happen, they won’t.

Hard work, focus, persistence and continuous improvement will allow anything to be achieved but don’t expect it to be easy.

Keep taking the desired steps you know you should be taking while realising it won’t be achieved easily or quickly and you won’t be disappointed. It is failure that stops us from achieving something, if you set up a jump that you’re definitely going to fail, this will screw up your confidence and kill your dreams.

Take a small jump, achieve it, celebrate it and look for the next step.

The easiest way to stay motivated towards any goal is by achieving the positive reinforcement gained by successfully completing something; make that little jump get one step closer to what you want and feel awesome.

When we are growing, we are ambitious, when we are ambitious we see what before was invisible, when we see the steps that were once invisible and make sure we take those steps eventually we reach the finish line.

Find your next step right now.
